HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB
(1973)

The movie starts off in the middle of the 15th century France with a warlock and a vampire woman being
led out to be killed.  To get the ball rolling right off the bat, the warlock is beheaded with a nice effect
and then the vampire woman is hung nude while she damns them and their descendents.

Jump forward and we’re listening to some annoying socialites talk about doing a séance.  Each is
familiar with the warlock and the vampire woman when they start talking of someone they’d like to
contact.  Apparently those are the only dead celebs in France.  The rest feels like a fast forward of
horror clichés—criminals on the side of the road, broken down car, crazy townspeople, hot women
looking suspiciously at our heroes, haunting of the mind….

The socialites end up crashing where the warlock was buried.  Soon enough people become
possessed and the killing spree begins.  Notably, in true horror fashion, the women tend to lose some
clothing around the time of their untimely deaths.
While the nudity is A+, the deaths are all pretty lame, going as far as being reminiscent of higher level
micro films today.  Maybe it’s the cardboard acting or the red paint looking blood but it doesn’t hold up (if
it ever did).  Or it could be the fact that the actors are all positioned like they’re constipated.   It’s also
one of those movies where actors simply talking—no matter about what—is considered
characterization.   The movie seems to be trying to entertain, tossing everything from witches to boobs
to blood to zombies but this also becomes its weak point as it meanders and can’t concentrate.

If you’re looking for intelligent horror, this isn’t it.  The best way I can sum it up is if you’ve ever watched
an episode of Red Shoe Diaries and thought, “Man, I wish these women could now be old enough to be
my grandmother AND there’d be blood …”—then, well, this movie is for you!
