INSIDE (2007)

The French sure know how to spill blood. "HIGH TENSION", though incredibly stupid, had great gore
and violence, but this film we'll be talking about is not only wonderfully violent, but manages to be
wonderful off-the-wall entertainment without falling into the retarded plot holes of that other movie. Who
would have imagined that you could make a hell of a tense movie about a pregnant lady fending off a
crazy woman that takes place pretty much in a bathroom?!?

Directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, this film is as simple as they get, but as gory as can
possibly be. After losing her boyfriend in a horrific car crash, pregnant Sarah, played delicately by
Alysson Paradis (Johnny Depp's sister-in-law) is visited on Christmas Eve by an incredibly disturbed
woman played by Beatrice Dalle (who was originally going to play Bruce Willis' wife in THE SIXTH
SENSE). This mysterious woman does not get a name, so for the purposes of this review we'll refer to
her as Apeshit. Apeshit arrives with one goal in mind, to take Sarah's kid away from her no matter the
cost.

So begins a blood-drenched night of wonderfully staged mayhem. Sarah manages to fend off the first
attack, escaping with only a stab wound to her womb, and hides in the bathroom as Apeshit tries to
smash her way in. Luckily for us and the sake of pacing others show up at the house (friends of Sarah,
cops, etc.) and end up getting stabbed, bludgeoned, and dismembered in their quest to protect the
defenseless Sarah. But Apeshit isn't taking any shit. She knows what she wants and she fights for it. In
some ways, I can admire her determination, but in the end she's just apeshit crazy. Speaking of the end,
I won't ruin it here, but all I'll say is that you won't see it coming.

I really enjoyed this movie. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did, but right from the get-go it went for
the throat with the blood and violence, and didn't flinch once. What makes it work is how realistic it is.
Everything in this film could really happen, and just like it helped the original "FUNNY GAMES" become a
memorable and harrowing experience, it really goes along way in convincing you that this is all really
happening and could possibly happen to you. If you're in the mood for a creepy, blood-soaked and
extremely violent roller coaster ride, then I would definitely recommend this instant French classic.
