Right off the bat this movie lured me in with its lewd, self explanatory title. A movie about a monster made out of fecal matter has to be pretty cool. Then the DVD box art has a turd hand reaching out from an open toilet with the tagline underneath reading: "Don’t get caught with your pants down". It seemed I was in for a messy, cheesy monster film.

The film sets-up the story fairly quickly. We all want to see the monsturd in action but how this creature came to be is just as fascinating and is explained in simple b-movie logic. We have an escaped serial killer named Jack Schmidt, trying to avoid capture. This guy is headline news material. Agent Hannigan from the FBI is notified. She was the one who worked the case and put this man behind bars. Then we have a mad scientist, Dr. Stern who is working on evil experiments with bacteria. And finally there is the sewer, which will become the birthplace and dwelling of this fowl smelling creature. If you’re versed in b-flick knowledge all you have to do is fill in the blanks and bam, you’ve got yourself a cheesy monster. For those of you who can’t figure it out (which is ok; it only means you have to watch some more b-movies) I’ll explain. The wanted man flees into the sewers to avoid capture. It just so happens that the evil Dr. Stern had recently dumped some green toxic sludge into the sewers. There is a confrontation between police and fugitive. He is shot and falls into a tank of toxic sewer sludge. His body melts but like the phoenix he rises up again as the Monsturd.

Soon the monster attacks begin. The beast appears in people’s bathrooms and pulls them down into the toilet. The creature looks good. Unfortunately it’s just as you would imagine such a monster would look like. I say it’s unfortunate because it is not overly impressive, shiny, or original. It’s the type of monster that we have seen variations of many times before in classic monster movies, except this one is brown. it’s a giant humanoid mass of shit. The deaths are non-violent and often off-screen. I could expect that from older films but with the frenzied pace of today’s horror world it just doesn’t cut it. How hard could it have been to throw in some blood or severed limbs? For a low-budget horror film to work without blatant gore or boobs it needs charm or depth and this film’s menace has neither. Instead we get more predictable plot developments.

I was excited at the beginning of this film because I was in familiar terrain. Secretly I was hoping that there would be a unique touch here or there, but nothing. Agent Hannigan teams up with the local sheriff and a team of experts to figure out how to kill the monster. Once again, I guessed the rest of the movie. Since the monster is made out of shit then flies would kill it, since flies eat shit. At least I think they do and the filmmakers thought the rest of us did too so there you go. The attack plan is a bit more detailed and includes funny and not so funny elements but all you need to know is that the police get an incredible amount of flies together and launch it at the monsturd. They eat him to death. The end.

This horror comedy from Brain Damage films is ok. It can be watched once but there are plenty of other low-budget horror films out there for you to enjoy. For anyone that is interested, Rick Popko and Dan West who made this film also turned out a sequel called Retardead in which Dr. Stern returns to continue his vile experiments.
